The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon etched by the Colorado River in the state of Arizona in the USA. It is contained within and maintained by Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, the Havasupai people and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt once traveled from Denver CO and also was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the panorama. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles in length, up to 18 miles wide and achieves a depth of over a mile. Nearly two billion years of Earth’s geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and also its tributaries slice their channels via layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted.
